Before baby is born, most parents have started to plan where their child will sleep. They have considered whether to put to a bassinet in their room, a crib in baby’s room or whether to co-sleep. Often plans can change once baby makes his appearance. Each child has a unique personality and different needs.
Many babies sleep best with Mom and Dad close by. Some doctors caution that babies should not sleep in bed with their parents due to risk of suffocation. In this situation, a co-sleeper is the most prudent option. A co-sleeper is a type of bassinet that attaches to your bed. It is close enough that you can easily reach your baby and breastfeed as needed, while keeping you on a separate surface for safety.
Another options is to put a traditional bassinet, cradle or crib in your room. During the first few weeks, a smaller space may be of comfort to him. Either way, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that baby sleeps in the same room as his parents for the first 4-6 months to help reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
Milk Nursingwear wants you to remember:
- Keep baby’s crib free of pillows, blankets, bumpers and toys.
- Breastfeeding helps to reduce the risk of SIDS.
In the end, the best place to bed baby down is the spot where all three of you will get the best night’s sleep.
